Hakusan Inc. 's optical connection interface related to MT Ferrule, Hakusan has developed and manufactured over many years, has been included in the Co-Packaged Optics (CPO) technical specifications being developed by the Advanced Photonics Coalition (APC).

What is the Advanced Photonics Coalition (APC)?

The Advanced Photonics Coalition (APC) is a consortium that promotes the development, publication, and maintenance of open technical specifications to encourage the widespread adoption of CPO.
In CPO, various components and modules, such as optical engines, laser light sources, and optical connectors, need to be densely mounted. At APC (Advanced Photonics Coalition), we are developing technical specifications for electrical interfaces, optical interfaces, mechanical and thermal design, management and diagnostics, and interoperability testing to enhance interoperability between products from different companies.
Hakusan will also join APC in March 2026, and will leverage its expertise in Multifiber optical connection technology to work on standardization activities for next-generation optical communication technologies, including CPO.

What is an APC specification?

APC's technical specifications define common interfaces and performance requirements between products and modules that make up a CPO system, with the aim of achieving interoperability in a multi-vendor environment.
Regarding the optical interface, requirements necessary for CPO implementation, such as optical performance, connectors, fiber routing, and test methods, are also being considered.

Optical connection interface based on MTCT connectors

In the System Level Architecture for CPO (Co-Packaged Optics) developed by APC, a connection method called Mid-Board Connection is being considered to improve the efficiency of fiber optic cabling from the optical engine to the front panel.
This time, Hakusan 's MTCT Connector was featured as an example of a Mid-Board Connection solution. Mid-Board Connection is expected to simplify fiber optic wiring inside the enclosure by providing a detachable optical connection point between the optical engine and the front panel, thereby standardizing the pigtail length on the optical engine side. The APC specification also indicates an approach that reduces the risk of damage to optical fibers and the complexity of manufacturing and implementation.
Hakusan will continue to leverage its expertise in Multifiber optical connection technology through its activities at APC, contributing to the development of next-generation optical communication technologies, including CPO.
